Story

The Desians are bad news; everyone knows it, and no one is willing to do anything about it.  No one except the citizens of Palmacosta.  Fed up with the abuse and tyranny these brave citizens, under the leadership of Governor-General Dorr, form a militia to fight the Desians.  The only problem is that they don't realize that Dorr is actually working for the Desians because they took his wife.  On a "training exercise" they are ambushed and taken to the human ranches where they will be used to cultivate exspheres.

Devon RIte'n is a member of the militia, but his is a special case.  The Desians chose him to cultivate a special exshpere called a cruxis crystal.  But Devon escapes.  Fueled by righteous rage and the need for justice he sets out to rescue his comrades and find the traitor - and then make the Desians pay.  But first there's the immediate problem of saving himself from the parasitic crystal on his left hand...  Oh, and avoiding the Desians, because they want their 'project' back something awful.

That's how he ends up with a nineteen year old girl as a traveling companion.  And a centuries old elf.  And a few other odd allies.  And, of course, there is still the whole issue of the Chosen and her party, because the only one who could help Devon with the exsphere was Dirk, who asked Devon to find his son and make sure the boy was alright.  And since Dirk's son is Lloyd, who travels with the Chosen, things are bound to get interesting.
